General Gecko FAQs
Q:Can I mix different genus and/or species of herps (reptiles and amphibians) in my terrarium?
A: When I first started keeping lizards, I wanted to put different kinds together to create a "natural" world of my own creation. It turned out mother nature was much better at this than I was! The American Chameleons (Anoles) decided to raid their terrarium-mate Barbour's Day (Phelsuma barbouri) gecko's eggs, and the House geckos (Hemidactylus frenatus) seemed afraid to eat. Mixing different types of lizards, geckos and other reptiles and amphibians is very tempting, but should be approached with extreme caution.
Territoriality and desire to eat whatever fits in their mouths are very common traits in most herps. It is not surprising some of my geckos were afraid to be seen! Territoriality behaviors are not always apparent to the inexperienced and sometimes even the experienced eye. Just because you don't see fighting does not mean it does not occur. Sometimes animals in this type of situation simply die of stress without a scratch on them! It is much simpler and safer for your reptiles and amphibians if you do not mix different kinds or even different species of the same genus. There are some situations that do work. Find out if your ideas will work from someone who has done it before you experiment and your animals will have the best chance at living long and healthy lives.
